The linear stability problem for the submerged Landau-Squire jet is considered. It is shown that the amplitude of intrinsic perturbations varies in space in a power-law manner as a function of the spherical radius R, measured from the source of motion. It has been established that the increment of sinusoidal perturbations becomes higher than that of axisymmetric perturbations, with ReD > 31. A model criterion for laminar-turbulent transition in the far region of the jet is proposed, which allowed for the first time a good agreement between the results of the linear stability theory and the experimental data at ReD < 2000 for The coordinates of the laminar-turbulent transition as a function of the Reynolds number.
