Annotation
This work is focused on the study of units of weight and measure in an etymological aspect. It includes research material taken from English dictionary data as well as from English language corpuses, such as http://corpus.byu.edu/bnc/ and http://www.anc.org/data/oanc/ngram. The underlying idea of this research is the study of measurement units in terms of establishing their initial meaning, and the study of semantic shifts. Anthropometric units were chosen as a topic of analysis. In the course of this work were identified certain historical factors which had influenced the etymology of the metric units. In addition, the analysis of 23 examples of lexemes was conducted. Studies of the paths and characteristics of development of this particular area of vocabulary, as well as the regularities of etymology of these words were also made. The researched pieces were examined in both a synchronic and diachronic aspect. The study has revealed a sufficiently large branch of English terms relating to the human body or its activities. This trend was especially strong in the Old English period. Although the modern language is dominated by the transition to a unified style of measurement , anthropocentric units remain relevant.
