In this project we study the problem of optimization of surge suppressors screen design for 220 kV outdoor switchgear and surge suppressors for 220 kV GIS. The distribution of the electric field along the varistor arrester assembly. The influence of the position of the screen on the intensity distribution and the value of the maximum field strength. The influence of the diameter of the metal oxide varistorson the value of the maximum field strength. We investigate the influence of the grounded tube diameter on the amount of the maximum field strength. Studies show that the increase in the external diameter of the pipe reduces the maximum field strength up to 6.6%. The results show that the increase in the diameter of the metal oxide varistors used to reduce the maximum field strength up to 3.2%.
