The work aims to determine the optimal thickness of the alpha-beta scintillator. Three types of widely used detectors were discussed, focusing on the scintillation detector. Different amplitude distributions of the detector response were obtained using Pu^239 alpha source, the discrimination threshold was determined, and differences in spectra between the collimated and noncollimated sources were observed. The theoretical spectra were obtained in three different ways, then a comparison with the experiment was made. The interaction of the beta source Sr^90 with the detector was investigated. By studying the spectra of a beta source, the optimal thickness of the scintillator was found, which is 200 microns for one, 400 microns for another, and 18 mm for the third instances.
