Nowadays, due to a rapid increase in the speed and volume of data processing, there is an ever growing need in the field of modern medicine for innovative solutions and automation. The aim of this master’s thesis is to develop a more efficient method of detecting, accentuating, and processing cell clusters, through a combination of elements from a branch of medicine called histology and Information Engineering. The marked cell clusters are depicted on the molecular images generated from tissue sections. Furthermore, this thesis provides an overview of the existing software programs created for the purpose of microscopy image processing, and identifies their advantages and disadvantages, as well as a review of the most popular methods intended to alleviate the persisting problem of the quality of image processing. A comprehensive database was created, containing micrographs of breast tissue and cervical tissue generated with the use of a light (optical) microscope. In order to gain a thorough understanding of the subject, a number of cytology and histology experts were consulted about the issue. Hence, so as to solve the abovementioned problem, the most optimal resources were utilised out of miscellaneous existent software environments, programming languages, and additional libraries. As the result of this master’s thesis a software program was developed based on the processing of the biomedical micrographs. The software program can detect, accentuate, and process cell clusters, providing medical personnel with invaluable information as regards future research and establishing diagnoses. Furthermore, this thesis makes some additional suggestions for the further application, improvement, and expansion of the utilised method.
