This work is devoted to the study of algorithmic methods for spike sorting, current problems in this area, description of the current modeling methods and the problem of drifts of electrode arrays during multichannel recordings of extracellular potentials. The paper describes in detail the main stages of spike sorting such as signal preprocessing, automated detection of the spiking activity and differentiation of the action potentials of different neurons (clustering). The work also describes the neuron modelling methods based on realistic biophysical models to test the performance of sorting algorithms and the consistency of the results. Electrode drifts modelling is presented as well. The method for detection and correction the instability of a recording multielectrode array is described, which potentially can improve the quality of spike sorting. And that in turn is one of the main conditions for progress in the study of neural processes.
