In this work, the research was undertaken on improving the quality of welded joints of Arctic structures and the effectiveness of gas shielding, during arc welding in the wind in the conditions of the far north. The literature survey in the area of welding in shielding gases in the wind have been implemented. We carried out an analysis of studies on the welding arc in shielding gases under conditions of air currents. The experiment of the wind on the gas shielding during welding was completed. Results of experimental research of the influence of perturbation factors when welding in shielding gas, using a confuser nozzle and a rounded welding torch tip are given. Also we present methodological and technical developments that may be useful in the development of a set of specialized equipment with an adaptive control system that allows welding at open sites in windy conditions. The research work was carried out in the framework of the Russian-Finnish project KS1054 "Energy-efficient systems based on renewable energy sources for the Arctic conditions" (EFREA), implemented by SPbPU, together with the Lappeenranta University of Technology LUT (Finland) and TsNIIM KM "Prometheus" under the auspices of the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Russia - South-East Finland.
