This work considers the development of pragmatic competence among students of non-linguistic majors in English language classes at higher school. The theoretical part of the research examines the concept of pragmatic competence, its main components and its role in the formation of communicative competence. Special attention is paid to pragmatic functions that are relevant for academic and professional communication, including making requests, asking for clarification, expressing agreement and disagreement politely, giving constructive feedback, reaching compromise and demonstrating professional self-presentation. The practical part of the work presents a system of pragmatics-oriented communicative tasks developed for students of economics-related non-linguistic majors. The tasks are organized according to the logic of the communicative approach and include awareness-raising activities, rewriting tasks, pair dialogues, group discussions, role plays, interview simulations, feedback and reflection. The pedagogical experiment described in the work involved an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received face-to-face instruction based on the developed system of communicative tasks, while the control group worked independently with self-study materials. The results of pre-test and post-test assessment showed positive dynamics in both groups. The experimental group demonstrated stronger progress, as its average score increased from 38.75 to 44.00 points out of 50, while the control group increased from 42.29 to 45.35 points. These results confirm the effectiveness of using pragmatics-oriented communicative tasks for developing students’ pragmatic competence. It was found that the methodologically grounded integration of communicative tasks into Business English instruction can increase students’ awareness of pragmatic appropriateness, improve their ability to choose suitable language forms according to context and create conditions for more effective academic and professional communication in English.
