The construction industry in Afghanistan plays an important role in national reconstruction, infrastructure development, urban growth, and employment generation. However, construction projects in the country are still commonly managed through traditional methods, including manual quantity take-off, experience-based scheduling, static cost estimation, and fragmented project monitoring. These practices often result in material overestimation, project delays, weak financial control, and inefficient resource management. Therefore, this Master’s thesis aims to develop and evaluate an integrated Digital Project Management framework for improving construction resource monitoring and project performance in the Afghan construction industry. The research was conducted using a case study of a four-story building project in Afghanistan. The proposed framework integrates 3D BIM modeling, digital scheduling, 4D construction simulation, and 5D BIM-based cost management. Autodesk Revit was used for BIM modeling and automated quantity extraction, Microsoft Project and Critical Path Method analysis were used for scheduling, Synchro 4D was applied for construction simulation, and BEXEL Manager with RSMeans cost data was used for cost estimation and financial monitoring. The results show that BIM-based quantity extraction improved material estimation accuracy by reducing the overestimation found in traditional manual methods, with an accuracy improvement of up to 10.82%. In terms of time management, the digital scheduling approach reduced project duration from 424 days to 339 days, saving 85 days and achieving approximately 20% time reduction. The 4D simulation improved construction sequence visualization and coordination. The 5D BIM cost management system improved cost transparency by linking quantities, resources, costs, and schedule data in one digital environment, enabling S-curve analysis and more effective financial monitoring. Overall, the study demonstrates that the integrated Digital Project Management framework can improve material accuracy, scheduling efficiency, cost transparency, resource monitoring, and decision-making in Afghan construction projects. The findings provide practical guidance for engineers, contractors, consultants, universities, and policymakers seeking to support the digital transformation of Afghanistan’s construction sector.
