"This book brings together those elements of the mechanics of plasticity most pertinent to engineers. The presentation of the introductory material, the theoretical developments and the use of appropriate experimental data appear within 16 chapters, plus an appendix containing worked solutions to selected exercises. A textbook style has been adopted in which worked examples and exercises illustrate the application of the theoretical material. The latter is provided with appropriate references to journals and other published sources. This volume has a broader content than most contemporary works on plasticity. It attempts to assemble all that the subject presently contains in two parts. The book deals with the classical incremental flow and total deformation theories of plasticity. Comparisons with experimental results are able to discriminate between the two theories. This work draws upon time dependent creep strain as an adjunct to more recent plasticity theory where the classical approaches are known to be deficient. Also considered are the many simplifying assumptions that facilitate practical applications. Useful applications illustrated include an absence of work hardening in elastic-perfect plasticity and an absence of elasticity in the case of a plastic-rigid solid. The package of topics presented is intended to complement advanced monographs on the theory of plasticity. The unique blend of contents is intended to support syllabuses across a diversity of undergraduate courses including manufacturing, engineering mechanics, strength of materials and applied mathematics"--.
