Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing all aspects of communications and journalism as automatic processes are being introduced into all facets of classical journalism: investigation, content production, and distribution. Traditional human roles in all of these fields are being replaced by automatic processes and robots. Media companies are increasingly “employing” robot journalists to discover hidden trends and insights by analyzing huge data bases, and write narratives without human involvement. The great economic efficiency of these robots can be expected to have a great appeal to the stockholders of these media companies. Arguably, the introduction of AI and robots into traditional functions of the journalists, such as investigative journalism and storytelling, poses a serious threat to the professional future of human journalism and its primary mission as guardians of democracy. Yet, Artificial Intelligence has serious limitations, and these are creating new opportunities for human journalists to thrive and compete with their robot competitors. In fact, if understood by journalists, these limitations can empower rather than replace them and other human content creators. As New Media technologies and applications are transforming the nature of the journalistic storytelling to fit the demands of new generations of media consumers, the new journalism story can be expected to become a mix of technologies and applications that are beyond the capabilities of current AI robot journalists. The book has two sections: The first section focuses on a discussion of AI, the new emerging field of robot journalism, and the opportunities that AI limitations create for human journalists. The second section offers examples of the new journalism storytelling that empower human journalists through the use of new technologies, new applications, and AI tools. While this book focuses on journalism, the discussion and conclusions are relevant to all content creators, including professionals in the advertising industry, which is a major main source of support for journalism.
