The present work is devoted to the numerical modeling of the flow through catalytic converters and particulate filters and the development of comprehensive 0D/1D models to estimate the pressure drop in catalytic converters and particulate filters. The objectives of the research were as follows: 1.Building of 3D CFD model of the laminar flow through catalytic converters and the particulate filter; the model validation using the experimental data. 2.Modeling of flows through catalytic converters and particulate filters under various operating conditions. 3.Development of a refined 0D model to estimate the pressure drop in catalytic converters based on 3D CFD modeling results. 4.Improvement of formulae to estimate pressure losses due to the sudden contraction and expansion in the particulate filters; the study of the pressure losses in the filter permeable channels. The work was fulfilled on the premises of Corning Inc. Modeling of the flow through catalytic converters and particulate filters under various operating conditions was performed to estimate the contributions of the different effects into total pressure drop. The refined 0D model to assess pressure losses in a catalytic converter was built using 3D CFD modeling results and validated with Corning experimental data. The improved formulae to estimate pressure losses due to sudden contraction and expansion in a particulate filter were proposed.
