The paper examines multilayer TiN/a-C coatings deposited onto 40CrNiMo6 steel using arc and laser evaporation. The influence of temperature (25 – 150 °C) on the mechanical and tribological properties is investigated. Using indentation and friction tests, it was found that with increasing temperature, hardness decreases by 12 – 14 % while the Young’s modulus remains unchanged. The coefficient of friction at 25 °C is 0.12 – 0.15, and at 150 °C it increases to 0.28–0.82; the wear rate increases by an order of magnitude.
