[Kim et al., Acta Mater. 160 (2018) 14].
The master thesis contains 82 pages, 46 figures, 68 formulas, 32 references and 1 appendix. KEY WORDS: nanowire, deformation twinning, aluminum, zigzag configuration, dislocation dipole. The presented work is devoted to deformation twinning in aluminum nanowires. An experiment by a Korean research group [Kim et al., Acta Mater. 160 (2018) 14] which observed the formation of zigzag twins in aluminum nanowires, is considered in detail. To explain this phenomenon, a theoretical model is proposed that describes the sequential nucleation of twin plates in the places where previous twin plates are blocked by the interfaces between the aluminum nanolayer and the amorphous passivating layers of aluminum oxide. When developing this model, the following main tasks were solved. By passing to the limiting case of equal elastic moduli in the well-known solution of the boundary-value problem of the theory of elasticity about a straight edge dislocation in a two-layer plate, the stress fields of a straight edge dislocation in a homogeneous thin layer are found. Using these fields, the maps of the von Mises intensity of shear stresses and the density of strain energy created by a dipole of edge superdislocations that model the blocked ends of the primary twin in a nanolayer under unidirectional tension, are built. In these maps, the most stressed areas in the nanolayer were identified. The position and orientation of these places, with taking into account the crystallogeometry of the nanolayer, determine the nucleation regions and the development directions of the secondary twins from the places, where the primary twin is blocked, to the opposite surfaces of the nanolayer. According to the proposed model, such a pattern of successive development of deformation twins should ultimately lead to the formation of a zigzag twin observed in the experiment under discussion [Kim et al., Acta Mater. 160 (2018) 14].
