This work is devoted to the study of theoretical approaches used in the description of the plasma plume formed during laser and laser-arc welding. Based on a number of scientific papers, an analysis of numerical and analytical approaches to the description of the plasma plume was carried out. It was found that the dynamics of a gas mixture of metal vapor and shielding gas is described by a system of hydrodynamic equations: the continuity equation, the general dynamic equation of motion of a viscous fluid, the diffusion equation, and the general heat transfer equation. In this case, a number of approximations can be used: the approximation of the boundary layer, the approximation of the laminar gas flow, the absence of thermal and barodiffusion, the axial symmetry of the key-hole, etc. To describe the plasma, we used a modified kinetic equation for the energy spectrum of electrons, which implies the absence of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The using the Van der Waals equation as a coupling equation in a system of hydrodynamic equations written in the approximation of axial symmetry of the boundary layer to obtain more accurate results was proposed.
