The aim of this paper is to develop a method for reconstructing the shapes of asteroids from their radio images. The radar image is a set of “Doppler-delay-backscatter intensity" triples displayed on the plane in the offset-delay axes. These parameters characterize the electromagnetic signal reflected from the surface of an asteroid, emitted by the locator and received by a radio telescope. The first step was to develop a test bench for modelling the free movement of the body and building a radar image on it, which is based on the principles of real radar. A three-axis ellipsoid was chosen as a model of an asteroid; the parameters for refinement are the set of an ellipsoid semi-axes. The developed adjustment method is based on the assumption that bodies that are close in geometric and dynamic parameters give similar deviations of the radar image in the sense of the introduced deviation functional. The essence of the technique is to minimize the introduced deviations in the semi-axes of the model asteroid relative to the desired by comparing both bodies radar images. Algorithm was carried out on a set of ellipsoids with different sets of semi-axes, orientations and instant angular velocities and showed satisfactory results of refining the asteroid shape. The practical significance of this work lies in the development of a research of small body radar, which is being worked on at IPA RAS. The results and the experience gained are planned to be applied for further research.
