The given work presents a complex approach to the study of the dual nature of the destruction of steel samples saturated with hydrogen. Within the framework of the research, a numerical solution was obtained for two tasks: fracture of a cylindrical corset bar with an elliptical cutout during uniaxial tension and failure of a rectangular section single edge notched bend specimen during three-point bending. The approach was implemented using our own developed algorithm written in C++ based on the finite volume method. The simulation takes into account the skin effect of saturation of metals with hydrogen, which is observed during standardized hydrogen saturation in various electrolyte solutions. The classic hydrogen-induced decohesion (HEDE) approach was used as a model for hydrogen embrittlement. According to the results of calculations, the parameters of crack propagation were obtained. We established that the pattern of destruction has a complicated, compound character. At the initial moment, brittle, hydrogen-induced cracking is initiated. Then it develops without the participation of matter in accordance with the classical approach of the theory of crack growth. It was shown that when the fracture propagates to a certain level, a local plastic deformation zone is formed at the crack tip, which, subsequently, can lead to the development of ductile fracture. The establishment of this fact explains the experimentally observed dual, brittle-plastic nature of the destruction of metal samples after their saturation with hydrogen.
