The escalating energy demand in our modern society necessitates the exploration of innovative strategies to meet this growing demand while upholding sustainability and minimizing environmental impact. Although nuclear power plants (NPP) produce electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, their efficiency of 33% is comparatively low since they work with low pressure and temperature values compared to fossil fuel-powered plants. In this context, the feasibility and performance of a combined power plant configuration comprising five MGT-80 gas turbine units (GTUs) coupled with a VVER1000 NPP are investigated to optimize the overall efficiency and enhance operational flexibility. The primary objective is to utilize the exhaust gases from the GTUs to increase the steam temperature and heat the feed water in the NPP, thereby augmenting the efficiency of the system. The simulation models of VVER1000 NPP, MGT-80 GTU and the proposed power plant configuration were individually developed in Engineering Equation Solver (EES) based on the principles of mass and energy conservation, as well as thermodynamic data and validated by comparing with real results. The simulation results and analysis of the proposed power plant configuration predict that such a power plant could operate more efficiently and be more economical than separate NPP and GTUs.
