The aim of the research is to develop a system of exercises to teach reading strategies on the basis of authentic texts to Chinese middle school students. The research set the following goals: 1) Conduct a theoretical analysis of the problem of teaching reading in EFL classrooms in China. 2) Analyse the concept of a reading strategy in EFL environments. 3) Analyse the concept of an authentic text. 4) Substantiate the educational value of using authentic texts in the process of teaching reading strategies to Chinese middle school students. 5) Create educational content for teaching reading strategies to Chinese middle school students on the basis of authentic texts. 6) Test the developed set of exercises in the real educational process, to analyse the results obtained. The relevance of the research is justified by 1) the need to intensify the teaching of reading strategies in EFL classes; 2) the need to incorporate authentic texts into the classroom bridging the gap between textbook English and real-life language use; 3) the emphasis on traditional teaching methods that focus on rote memorization and translation at the expense of higher-order reading skills. The data for the research were collected in domestic and foreign scientific research literature and official Internet resources. The study resulted in the development of a set of exercises for teach reading strategies on the basis of authentic texts to Chinese middle school students.
