This bachelor’s thesis is devoted to the numerical modeling of the effect of microstructural defects on the transverse Young’s modulus of unidirectional fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials through the development of a computational material model. The aim of the study is to develop a methodology for the numerical investigation of the influence of microstructural defects on the effective elastic properties of unidirectional fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials and, on this basis, to develop a mathematical model that allows the results of RVE-based simulations to be interpreted as the characteristics of a material point in a continuum medium. The following tasks were accomplished in the study: formulation of the modeling problem, including the classification of microdefects, a review of current research practice, definition of the study architecture, and development of the experimental matrix; development of computational model cases and implementation of the verification procedure; validation of the computational scheme and performance of the numerical investigation; analysis of the results and construction of “defect–property” relationships. The simulations were carried out in ANSYS LS-DYNA, while ANSYS Material Designer was used for verification purposes. It was found that, for first- and second-order RVE-models, agreement with the experimental value of the transverse Young’s modulus is achieved at different values of interfacial stiffness. It was shown that the stochastic distribution of fibers, porosity, pore localization, and the nature of their spatial distribution significantly affect the transverse Young’s modulus. The most pronounced reduction in this property was observed for pores located at the fiber–matrix interface. Based on the numerical results, the analytical micromechanics model was modified for both the defect-free structure and various porosity configurations.
