This thesis addresses the configuration of overcurrent protection in a 10 kV distribution network integrated with a solar power plant (SPP). The study considers a scenario where the installed capacity of the SPP is 5 MW, and its power output varies according to insolation and module temperature. The primary engineering challenge is to maintain the sensitivity of both time-delay and instantaneous overcurrent protection given the limited fault current of grid-tied inverters and bidirectional power flows. The objective of this research is to develop an algorithm that automatically recalculates relay protection settings based on the current state of the SPP and verifies these values using the sensitivity coefficient. The simulation model incorporates the specified design parameters: two 2500 kW inverter units, a 5000 kVA transformer (0.63/10.5 kV), an external grid short-circuit capacity of 150 MVA, and an insolation range of 200–1000 W/m² for the main fault simulation cases. The novelty of this work lies in treating the protection setting as a dynamically calculated variable that depends on the available capacity of the photovoltaic array, the permissible inverter fault current, and the minimum short-circuit current within the protected zone. Fault detection is further verified by a voltage drop at the point of common coupling, preventing the protection system from misidentifying normal solar generation fluctuations as electrical faults.
