This study examines the accelerating process of de-dollarization within BRICS amid growing concerns over the dominance of the U.S. dollar and its use as a tool of unilateral sanctions. The research aims to analyze the motivations behind BRICS countries’ efforts to reduce dollar dependence, evaluate the main de-dollarization mechanisms, and assess their effectiveness in promoting a more diversified international monetary system. The study is based on transaction cost theory, institutional competition theory, and geopolitical economy, combining comparative case studies and quantitative analysis. Three cases—China–Russia, China–Brazil, and Russia–India—are examined, alongside time-series regression of the U.S. dollar’s share in global reserves (1999 2025) and correlation analysis of exchange and cross-exchange rates (2015–2025). The results indicate that global de-dollarization is gaining momentum. The analysis identifies the renminbi as a regional anchor currency within BRICS, while currency arrangements that exclude the renminbi and lack multilateral or digital support demonstrate weaker and less stable relationships. The findings suggest that sustainable de-dollarization requires the coordinated use of bilateral agreements, multilateral financial mechanisms, and digital payment instruments. The study also provides practical recommendations for BRICS countries on expanding local-currency financing, integrating payment systems, and strengthening liquidity support mechanisms.
