This research is devoted to developing summarising skills in foreign languages. This was done by investigating summarising skills as a component of text mediation and complex linguistic phenomenon, identifying and analyse the approaches to developing summarising skills (oral and written forms) in the EAP classroom, studying the role of summarising in academic discourse and specifying the term “AI tools”, classify these tools and to investigate how they are used in foreign language learning focussing on teaching EFL, ESP and EAP. A research design was then proposed integrating ChatPDF into teaching summarising skills and a complex of learning activities for improving STEM subject PhD students’ summarising skills with the integration of ChatPDF was subsequently developed. This was carried out amongst 24 STEM subject Ph.D. students over 4 teaching hours and the effectiveness of using the proposed complex of learning activities in EAP settings was established using measures of student confidence and competence, and verified as statistically significant using binomial distribution. Finally, further recommendations to those wishing to teach summarising skills with the integration of AI powered tools were formulated.
