This work examines the problem of literalism in interpreting and their impact on the audience’s perception of the translated text. Literalism is understood as a translation decision in which the interpreter reproduces the formal (lexical, syntactic, stylistic) features of the source text at the expense of its communicative content and the norms and usage of the target language. The theoretical part systematizes approaches to the definition, classification and causes of literalisms in Russian and foreign translation studies, characterizes the specifics of interpreting as a distinct type of translation activity and considers the relationship between literalism and the categories of equivalence and adequacy. The empirical material consists of two simultaneous interpretations into Russian of the speech delivered by US Vice President J. D. Vance at the Munich Security Conference (February 2025). Using a comparative and contextual-semantic analysis, lexical, syntactic, semantic, stylistic, metaphorical and tautological literalisms are identified and classified, their impact on perception is determined, and the two interpreting strategies are compared. It is found out that literalisms in simultaneous interpreting are systematic and have a multi-level negative impact on perception: semantic and syntactic literalisms, which distort the meaning and connotation of an utterance, prove to be the most damaging, whereas lexical and stylistic literalisms mainly reduce the “naturalness” of the interpretation. The results obtained can be used in courses on the theory and practice of translation, in the development of didactic materials and in training simultaneous interpreters to deal with the political discourse.
