The subject of this book is the interference pattern due to the interaction between the systems of Russian (L2) and Tajik (L1) languages. The main source of phonetic interference is differences between the systems of the interacting languages: they include different phonemic systems, different rules of phonemic and allophonic distribution and different intonation. Thus the Russian (L2) speech of Tajik (L1) speakers acquires certain phonetic properties related to the phonetic and phonological characteristics of their native language. As a result of such interaction, there is a specific variant of the Russian language. This book provides an overview of state of the art of the field of Tajik-Russian bilingualism and our new findings. One of the objectives of this study is to identify speech features of bilingual Tajiks who speak Russian. The first section is about Tajik-Russian language contact, Russian language in Tajikistan and Tajik-Russian bilingualism in Russia. Phonetic outcomes of Tajik-Russian bilingualism at the segmental level are the main subject of the second section. The study of L2 phonetics and phonology is discussed in the third section. The fourth section is about the analysis of Tajik-Russian interference in bilingual speakers’ speech at the suprasegmental level. The final section concerns the communicative effects of phonetic interference.
